Just to talk...

A little home. Not much more than that. Just a single wide, yet from within there glowed the lights of habitation. We gingerly climbed the slippery ramp covered with a small layer of freshly fallen snow and knocked... "Come in!" The door creaked and before me there was a pile of things - I don't know what they all were, but they were things - scattered here, piled there.

"Oh, its you again!" Smiles lit the faces of the family and their eyes shone. "Merry Christmas!"

A young couple with a baby and one on the way. A grandmother and some cousins. And then yes, on the bed, there he was - Elvis - paralyzed from his waist down, and just recently too...

"I went and looked at your website... I went to every page, - boom boom boom boom boom - all the way across..." Joy filled here face
"Which one was your daughter? The one on your left or right?"

We bent our minds, trying to remember the picture... "Would you like to meet her? The rest of the family is outside..."

Back out in the wintry air... There we stood, the snow under our feet, the brisk breeze about our chilly necks. We stood and listened as he told us his story... He just wanted to talk, to share his life... Caring for his disabled father since he was fifteen. Working on his father's farm, farming 16 acres of tomatoes. Falling in love with his wife since he was in sixth grade. Their little baby Cameron, and she had told how Summer was on the way...

And Elvis... He was the brother-in-law, and probably would have been killed when it happened, had it not been for something that came up with his work. They were just going to help a girl out of an abusive relationship... and the boyfriend shot... Two died, Elvis was paralyzed - waist down... Now there were 2am nights every night taking care of him. Messes to clean up... Learning physical therapy - when the insurance runs out they'll have to do it themselves... They try to keep him positive. Bringing him outside when it snowed... Taking him over to the family next door to play some games...

Commitment. Love.

Just a little time to talk - to know and be known... The cold air still swirled around us... but there was warmth in our friendship.

We bustled back into the car and pulled out... leaving a little home behind. Yet it still had the glow of habitation, and maybe just a bit brighter?...

I like to think so.

Jeremy, Jenny, Cameron, Summer, Lori, Elvis, Adam... Thank you - for just a little time to talk and much more... more than you can know now...

God, teach me to love... as you love.

Merry Christmas
